Permits, Guides, Lotteries, OH MY!
So you’re planning an adventure, but suddenly, you’re knee-deep in permit applications, lottery drawings, and guide bookings. It can feel overwhelming, but don’t worry—we’ve got you covered. Here’s what you need to plan ahead for, what you might be able to snag at the last minute, and a few of our favorite adventures that don’t require a permit at all.
Plan Ahead: Permits & Lotteries You Should Know About
Angels Landing Before the Chains
Angels Landing (Zion National Park)
One of the most iconic hikes in the Southwest, Angels Landing, requires a permit if you want to go up the chains to the summit. However, if you miss out on a permit, you can still hike to Scout Lookout, which has an epic view without the exposure of the chains section. 🔥

If you are scrambling for a permit, look no further than our friends over at Land Beyond Zion Tours, who are authorized to guide on Angels Landing and have permits in hand for the 2025 season. Plus, you can take 5% off your booking when you use the code BASECAMP37. Click the link above for more info!
The Wave (North Coyote Buttes)
This bucket-list destination is one of the hardest permits to get, but if you’re lucky enough to score one, it’s absolutely worth it. If you can’t snag a permit, that’s okay. There are a number of wave-like landscapes that dot the Southwest, and we’ve highlighted a few below.

South Coyote Buttes
South Coyote Buttes
Often overshadowed by The Wave, South Coyote Buttes offers similarly stunning rock formations but with an easier permit process. If you want a less crowded alternative, this is a great option. Note: the road to get to South Coyote Buttes requires a vehicle with 4x4 and high clearance, plus some serious off-road driving skills, so booking a guided tour with Dreamland Safari Tours is highly recommended.

Guided Adventures Worth Booking in Advance
Kayaking Through Horseshoe Bend (Colorado River)
This isn’t a guided trip, but you must reserve a boat ride upstream and rent kayak gear. It’s one of our top recommendations, and we have a 5% discount for guests through Kayak Horseshoe Bend! using code BASECAMP37. Since spots are limited, book ahead—last-minute options are rare.
Canyoneering Near Zion
Want to experience hidden slot canyons beyond the crowds? Canyoneering is an incredible way to do just that. The fantastic guides at All Ways Adventure will help you plan your totally custom and totally private adventure.
ATVing to Peek-a-Boo Slot Canyon and the Great Chamber
These two locations are less crowded than other slot canyons and don’t require permits, but they do require a rugged off-road drive. A guided ATV tour with Expedition Kanab ensures you get there safely and have a blast along the way! Use code Camp5 to get 5% off your booking.
Off-Roading to White Pocket
If you didn’t get a permit for The Wave, White Pocket is an incredible alternative. The swirling rock formations here are just as mesmerizing but without the lottery process. Note: the road to White Pocket, much like South Coyote Buttes, requires a vehicle with 4x4 and high clearance, plus some serious off-road driving skills, so booking a guided tour with Dreamland Safari Tours is highly recommended.
No Permit, No Guide, No Problem!
The best part? There are tons of incredible places you can explore without a permit or a guide. Some of my favorites include:
The Nautilus – Next to the White House trailhead along the Paria River, this hidden gem will give you wave-like vibes without the permit headache.
Toadstool Hoodoos – One of our favorite hikes in Grand Staircase-Escalante. Don’t forget to explore the all around the hoodoos for the full experience.
Buckskin Gulch via Wire Pass – One of the longest slot canyons in the world, unlimited permits are available at the trailhead or on www.recreation.gov.
Horseshoe Bend Overlook – A classic, easy walk with an unbeatable view. Please keep in mind there is a fee to park at the trailhead.
Mansard Great Diverse Trail – This gem is located just across Highway 89 and features some of the best petroglyphs in the region.
